"If Beale Street Could Talk"

"I look at myself in the mirror. I know that I was christened Clementine, and so it would make sense if people called me Clem, or even, come to think of it, Clementine, since that's my name: but they don't. People call me Tish.(3)"

"Today, I went to see Fonny. That's not his name, either, he was christened Alonzo: and it might make sense if people called him Lonnie. But, no, we've always called him Fonny. Alonzo Hunt, that's his name. I've known him all my life, and I hope I'll always know him.(3)"

Today I went to see Fonny, the father of my soon to be born baby. "We were going to get married, but then he went to jail.(5)" You see, Fonny was put in jail for being falsely accused of a terrible crime he did not commit. "And I'm not ashamed of Fonny. If anything, I'm proud. He's a man. You can tell by the way he's taken all this shit that he's a man. Sometimes, I admit, I'm scared because nobody can take the shit they throw on us forever. But, then, you just have to somehow fix your mind to get from one day to the next. If you think too far ahead, if you even try to think too far ahead, you'll never make it.(7)" Please help me and my family prove this young black male's innocence. I am deeply in love with him and am determined to bring justice

CRIME ACCUSATIONS: Fonny was framed for defending me in a when I was sexually harassed in a local store. The cop that was supposed to handle my situation was a racist that framed my baby Fonny of a crime. He stated that Fonny had raped a Puerto Rican woman that he never encountered before. After going to trial Fonny was then put in jail to serve time. I will not stand for racial hatred when a man is in jail for a crime he did not commit; especially when that man is the man I aspired to create a life together with my baby.

SUSPICIONS: It is known to my family and I that the woman who has accused Fonny of rape fled to Puerto Rico. "I don't think she has gone very far-they certainly do not have the means for a long journey. But her family may have returned her to Puerto Rico,(94)" was the statement my lawyer made to me concerning this situation. I will do anything in my power to raise money and confront this woman. The support of my family is all I have. If anyone is willing to provide me with any information known to them of this woman please contact the guestbook on this page. "In six months time, our baby will be here.(95)"

"I met Fonny in the streets of this city. I was little, he was not so little. I was somewhere around six-and he was around nine. They lived across the street, him and his family.(9)"

Please get in touch through my guestbook to provide me with any additional information or assistance regarding my dilemma. Thank You.

"You a woman now. You got to be a woman. We are in a rough situation-but, if you really want to think about it, ain't nothing new about that. That's just exactly daughter, when you do not give up. You can't give up. We got to get Fonny out of there. I don't care what we have to do to do it-you understand me daughter? (96)"
